Dr Marinus van den Berg is Co-ordinator of the international project ""Industrialisation, Language Contact, and Identity Formation in China and Europe."" This project is supported by the International Institute for Asian Studies, Leiden, the Netherlands, where he is an affiliated fellow (www.iias.nl/ilci). He is the author of Language Planning and Language Use in Taiwan: A Study of Language Choice Behaviour in Public Settings (Taipei: Crane, 1986) and The Chinese Particle LE: A Study in Common Ground Co-ordination (London: Routledge, 2006).Dr Daming Xu is Director of the Sociolinguistics Laboratory at Nanjing University (www.sociolinguistics.cn) and Director of the China Center for Linguistic and Strategic Studies (www.chinalanguage.net). He is the author of A Survey of Language Use and Language Attitudes in the Singapore Chinese Community (Nanjing: Nanjing University Press, 2004) and Current Trends in Sociolinguistics (Beijing: China Social Sciences Publishing, 1997/2004).
