Overview

Accessible yet sophisticated book that discusses the issues of immigration on a global level. Should people who are oppressed or simply want a better life for themselves be able to move to countries that offer more opportunities? Or does immigration to these countries mean less opportunities for the people who already live there? Are current immigration policies working? Are they fair?

All of these titles feature attractive layouts with well-captioned photos. Some conclude with a checklist of Quick Tips to sum up the previous chapters. In a glaring omission, Violent Crime's section about gun violence in schools mentions neither the Columbine shootings nor the Virginia Tech massacre. A significant part of Offshore Oil Drilling examines the 2010 Deepwater Horizon explosion, an event which will shape debate on the subject for decades to come. Purchase individual titles based on the needs of your collection. Bibliography. Glossary. Websites. Index. Bernie Morrissey, Middle School Librarian, The Harker School, San Jose, California Library Media ConnectionJanuary/February 2012 Issue-- Library Media Connection Cyber Bullying explains the problem in a concise narrative that describes who bullies are and why they torment others. Chapters flow easily from the descriptions of the issue to who is affected, the pain caused, and ways to stop kids from tormenting other kids. Quick tips and a chart listing types of cyber bullying and prevention enhance this volume. Immigration has chapters on The Effects of Immigration, The Immigration Industry, and Immigration and the Media. A chart shows the immigrant populations of different countries. Internet Safety discusses types of crime, cyber bullying, phishing, and scams and viruses, ending with ways to protect yourself. Statistics and websites provide information for both individual research and for educators wishing to lead discussion on the topic. There is a little overlap with Bullying, but Internet includes identity theft, personal information that can be used for stalking, etc. Each book has a purpose and is different enough to justify purchasing both. Colorful photographs, case studies, and questions to debate make these volumes good choices for student research and debate, and to increase critical thinking. - Denise Moore, O'Gorman Junior High School, Sioux Falls, SD School Library Journal February 2012 Issue-- School Library Journal
