OverviewIf All the Stars Were Flowers is a poetry collection by default: It isn't journalism, but perhaps could be; social and political commentary, at least partly; environmentally focused, at times; and with a degree of reflection and insight without the baggage of memoir or religion. The poems are in free verse, but both function and form are subordinate to the importance Jasper places on the concept behind each poem; the initial spark of some are noted at the back of the book. He deals with the demons of war, the light one finds beneath a ginkgo tree at autumn, the history of crows and sparrows, corn wolves and hemp - yet there is a solidarity of thought and feeling that runs like a hot wire through each of the works, connecting what might otherwise be considered a disparate group. The work is very much in the vein of it's opening quotation, gleaned from the Qing Dynasty novel, The Dream of the Red Chamber: The words are common, but the sentiment is quite profound.
