I am Sam

Overview

Soup Kitchen Kids return in Book 3 from the series. There is a new outdoor pool opening up soon near Pippa. She, along with the other Soup Kitchen Kids are super excited. At the same time, a strange thing happened. A stranger appeared and is now eating with Crazy Mary at the Soup Kitchen. The stranger claims that they are Samuel, Mary's great grandson. The problem is Mary was never married and had no family. Oddly, Samuel looks like a girl complete with makeup. The mystery is solved when Pippa's family discover that Mary did indeed have a daughter 60 years ago that had been given up for adoption. Now, the grandson of that daughter is here to see Mary. Samuel though is transgender. Born a male but identifies as female. She goes by Sam and she is homeless with nowhere to go. Living arrangements are sorted out but finding a job for Sam proves to be very difficult. Even the new pool that was looking for lifeguards won't hire her even though she is more than qualified. Then, on the opening day at the pool, a huge crowd turns out and disaster strikes. Sam comes to the rescue. It took a near tragedy for people to realize that a person's gender doesn't mean much when a life is in danger. It is what is in people's hearts and their courage that determines the type of person they are, not what their gender is.
