OverviewJacob Riis was a Danish immigrant to New York in the 1880s. As he was poor, he was forced to live in a slum. He got a steady job, and moved on, but he always felt compassion for the residents of poorer areas. He wrote this book to accompany a series of pictures he took. The book and the pictures sparked real change in the slums and led to government regulation and intervention. Leverton Publishing. We have the World's Books.
