Table of ContentsReviewsSadly, Gotham Central is one of the most overlooked comic book series I keep on our shelves - I've decided something needs to be done about that! Veteran Crime/Comic Book authors Ed Brubaker and Greg Rucka collaborated on this exceptional procedural crime series that focused on the Major Crimes Unit of Gotham City. It seems like a no-brainer to set a crime book in the heart of the Batman Universe and yet until it's release there hadn't been anything quite like this before. I've always felt one of the most fascinating elements of the Batman universe is Gotham City and it's bizarre inhabitants. By focusing the storytelling lens on the police department, the one force for order in a city gone mad you find yourself with a wealth of compelling stories and fascinating characters. The ensemble cast of Gotham Central is tremendously realized mixture of characters that don't all get their chance to shine, but they are all consistently and convincingly written within the bounds of this fictional universe. For the most part they are broken individuals in a fight they have no chance of winning and who can blame them? When someone as mad as the Joker is running around with a sniper rifle it's hard to hold on to your sanity. Amongst the many Detectives the most central figure is Renee Montoya, her story would not come to fruition for five years over the pages of Gotham Central and 52. Already a Gotham City veteran when the book begins over the course of the series her very identity is called into question as the foundations of her life, professional and private are stripped by the corrupt within the Police Force and very famous Batman villain, one who is equal parts tragic as he is horrifying. Michael Lark's art is a perfect fit for the writing; it's sombre, gritty and grounded while still being emotive and expressive and all without looking overly photo referenced, a tool a number of artists use these days to create a sense of realism. Gotham Central is a premise that could have gone on to this very day, but in many ways I'm thankful that it came to an end and what we have now is a very complete undiluted story which is very rare in monthly comics. It still resonates with me now as I. along with the cast ask, is Batman more of a threat than an ally in the war on crime? Author InformationGreg Rucka is the author of WONDER WOMAN- THE HIKETEIA, SUPERMAN- THAT HEALING TOUCH, GOTHAM CENTRAL, Queen and Country and many other graphic novels and co-author of 52, as well as suspense novels including Patriot Acts, Critical Space and Shooting at Midnight.
