Excerpt from Girolamo Savonarola Among the communes of the northern districts, exhausted as they were by internal feuds, the struggle for existence eventually became so in tense that the democratic spirit of independ ence which had characterised them was compelled to give way before the paramount necessity of securing some strong and efficient ruler who could compose the turmoils within and maintain the position of the commune among its external enemies. The particular sort of despot to which, each commune would thus least reluctantly sub mit itself was determined by particular circum stances relative to the commune in question, but the general causes which led to an age of despot isms, following an age of truculent democracy, were much the same in all cases. These despots, once established, were naturally anxious to guard them selves against rivals who might supplant them, and to extend the area of their government.
