OverviewThe Anhaltische Gemaldegalerie Dessau, founded in 1927, with its significant holdings of German, Flemish and Dutch paintings, only existed twelve years when the Second World War began. After the incisive losses of works of Classical Modernism and the Bauhaus through their confiscation as 'Degenerate Art' in 1937, the war events resulted in losses of far greater proportions, including works by Albrecht Durer, Lucas Cranach da, Pieter Brueghel the Younger The Palais Reina, the domicile of the Dessau Picture Gallery in the center of the city, was destroyed in the air raid on May 28, 1944. The present volume presents the results of many years of research into the war losses of Paintings from the Anhaltische Gemaldegalerie.
