OverviewGeorgia O'Keeffe (1887-1986), one of the most significant artists of the twentieth century, was a painter who took an independent and visionary road. Her paintings evoke varied interpretations yet maintain their beauty and simplicity. O'Keeffe's life is woven together with that of her husband, photographer Alfred Stieglitz. Often living apart, they exchanged letters amounting to over 25,000 pieces of paper. He took hundreds of elegant pictures of every part of her, considering the collected images his portrait of O'Keeffe. They were artists together and shared the heat of their love and their art. O'Keeffe lived to be 99 years old, living and painting for more years without Alfred than with him. She is considered the mother of American Modernism.
