It was refreshing to read a nice middle grade novel with a well-thought out plot... Callie is about as realistic as a character can get. a funny and witty romp into adolescence. Her approach to this often sensible and dour subject is like a breath of fresh air. I loved Callie. In fact, I wish I was Callie, but I'm not. I can take comfort that she exists as role model for all young girls out there dealing with life. This book will appeal to old and young alike. There's no reason why it shouldn't. Do yourself a favour and grab a copy. ... the author has touched on these issues in a rather beautiful manner, and with a touch of magic, too. There's a dragon (which my son described as 'a theatrical creature') who is an absolute blast of a character and, in my opinion, deserves his very own cult cartoon, but Callie's character is well-developed, too. She has real grit and determination, which makes her so damn likeable. The pitch of this tale is perfect and the plot flows at a good pace. If you're anything like me (and my son), you will come away from this moving read feeling uplifted, remembering the importance of family and, hopefully, feeling grateful for what you have in life. ...stayed up well into the night so I could finish it the same day, because the moment I picked it up, I couldn't put it down. I think it is intended for middle school age, but I absolutely adored it from beginning to end! It is fun and fairy tale-ish, without being predictable! A mixture of real issues, combined with a little dragon magic... it is delightful and fun! WELL worth the cost and read! "Praise for No Such Thing: ""...funny, smart and insightful...""
