Overview

The author's original intent for Escape! was a fast-paced romantic thriller suitable for escaping boredom while flying on a coast-to-coast airliner. While gazing at the rolling landscape beneath the wings, Henderson imagined a hot fugitive couple running from cold contract killers, while eluding pursuit by the FBI and every other law enforcement agency along their 2000-mile route from Lake Michigan to the Pacific Ocean. Among the plot's surprises was one for the author: the unexpected emergence of the assertive and spicy Elissa Bennett Pope as the story's brightest star. Elissa is the daughter of Italian-American parents in Chicago's wealthiest suburb, groomed from puberty to marry a multi-millionaire like Patrick Livingston Pope, heir to Chicago's Pope Machinery empire. Unfortunately, her prize had become a pugilist, beating her to pulp from time to time. Her desperate urge for freedom ended in a bitter divorce, and she escaped with just enough resources to become an independent real estate broker, property manager, and -- for personal therapy -- a summer stock theatrical performer. When California architect Grey Harper arrived in peaceful Lake Forest to convert a former military base into a $60 million luxury housing development, Elissa's agency found a suitable cottage for him to rent. It was while meeting in that cottage that a strange intruder set in motion Elissa's most hectic escape ever -- running with Harper for their lives, for more than 2000 miles in a Mercedes-Benz roadster, to a clifftop climax at Harper's spectacular home in Carmel-by-the-Sea, California. Throughout the journey, Elissa is never quite sure whether Harper is just a brilliant architect with a California tan, water-blue eyes surrounded by crinkles whenever he smiled, a masculine voice and a wry sense of humor -- or a widower with a dark past, accused by the FBI of murdering his Chicago client to cover-up a major screw-up. Elissa's survival is at stake in either case, and she must always rely upon her own wits and courage and cash, every minute of every day -- and night! Online reader reviews of this novel have all posted four or five stars, including this brief comment: If you're looking for a fun read, you've found it! The pace and twists rank right up there with Dan Brown but with better developed characters and a more realistic (but no less exciting!) plot, making this a book that's hard to put down. If you're looking for a fun read, you've found it! The pace and twists rank right up there with Dan Brown but with better developed characters and a more realistic (but no less exciting!) plot, making this a book that's hard to put down. - MeriC on Amazon This was one of the best books I have read in a long time - the story was original and suspenseful, the characters likeable and interesting, and the romantic aspect of the story was well done. I did not want the story to end. It hooked me immediately, unlike so many books that you have to let grow on you. - Jody Jones, Amazon I thoroughly enjoyed this clever story. As the pages slowly unraveled the mystery, they were also building the romance, while at the same time deftly describing the countryside through which the characters travelled, giving the feeling that you are right there along with them. There are some great surprises, the dialogue is smart and funny, and it's fun to root for the relatable characters through the suspense. A fast-paced modern thriller! - Carol L, The Wildwood Independent David Emil Henderson's work is new to me, but I couldn't put Deadly Dividends (Escape!) down! The work travelled country that I know, and the references are well researched, so it was a pleasant narrative to begin with, but I felt drawn into the characters, and felt that I knew them. The author has a nice style that doesn't get in the way, while drawing the story in a way that allows the mind to move into it. I'll look forward to another of Mr. Henderson's novels! - denghowun, Amazon (Note: Deadly Dividends was a 1st Edition name, changed to Escape for later editions.) At times like this, I wish Amazon offered half stars. If they did, this (4-star review) would be a 3.5-star review. The story line was strong enough to keep me reading to the end, but not as compelling as I'd hoped from the description of the book. The heroine is an intriguing character who shows some real growth and development as the story advances, in contrast to the hero who is fairly 2-dimensional throughout and ultimately simply not credible. As the story reached its climax, the author tossed in an interesting twist but he weakened its impact by sending the scene's participants into an endless conversation that stalled the plot's pace. In fact, overall, the unevenness of the plot pace does this book in. The epilogue is too long, too rambling, and ultimately unnecessary. I'm not sorry I gave this new author a try and I'll give him another shot in the future. He clearly has talent and room to grow. - Dan Shafer, Amazon Deadly Dividends ( Escape! ) is a fast action, mystery, thriller, filled with conspiracy and romantic overtones. Intrigue starts with the first chapter. There is no wait or long plot staging before you are immersed in the action. A real page turner with an epic ending. - Distinguished Citizen, Amazon Escape was a real surprise, and a pleasant one. The cover illustration attracts attention but doesn't measure up to the excellent writing inside. I enjoyed an exciting, action-packed, super-fast read about a resourceful architect and a feisty female property manager who run into each other by accident. Finding that they are targeted for another accident - a fatal one - by renegade government agents, they combine forces in more ways than one and escape one near-capture after another from Chicago to Carmel-by-the-Sea. There's enough action, romance, intrigue and suspense for anyone. Escape had another title in an earlier edition but the new title tells the tale more accurately. The author's expressed intent was to produce a good quick read, and he has done it. - Richard L. Fay, Amazon

Author Information

David Emil Henderson began his journey in journalism with national consumer magazines, writing exclusive interviews with Henry Fonda, Barbra Streisand, Robert Preston, Charlton Heston, and other stars of stage and screen, along with a broad range of news and features. A move to newspapers put him in charge of news and editorial pages of a Time, Inc.-owned chain of Chicago area newspapers that had won state and national first place awards for General Excellence. He took those skills to Montana and swept the state press association's top awards for news, editorials, features, columns, use of photos, and best advertising idea -- all in his first year as editor and publisher. A decade later, he extended his cross-country adventures to California, as marketing vice-president for a San Francisco Bay Area newspaper group jointly held by Gannett, The Tribune Company, Media News Group, and The New York Times. Henderson now owns a company in Northern California and Montana, publishing fiction and nonfiction books and periodicals by himself and other writers. For many decades, Henderson also practiced Architectural Design and construction, creating new and remodeled residential and commercial structures in Illinois, Montana, Wyoming, and California.
