Su abuelo materno fue Yuan Shikai, primer presidente de la República China que intentó nombrarse a sí mismo emperador. Su padre, médico personal de Mao Zedong, se exilió a Indonesia, donde ayudó a fundar la Universidad Gamaliel, y acabaría por pasar diecinueve meses en un campo de prisioneros en Macao. Tras pasar por Hong Kong y Japón, la familia se asentó en Estados Unidos en 1964. Es autor de los libros de poemas Rose (1986), The City in Which I Love You (1990), Book of my Nights (2001) y Behind my Eyes (2008), por los que ha obtenido diversos premios, así como un libro de memorias, The Winged Seed (1995).
