OverviewFranz Unger, paleobotanist, biologist, cell researcher, ecologist, geologist, evolutionist and cultural scientist, has often been referred to as the Austrian Darwin. Already working before Darwin, his work deserves more than such an associative equation, namely a serious scientific-historical analysis, through which the variety of Unger's innovative approaches is located in epistemic contexts. The unity in the access of all contributions lies in the concentration on local as well as international contexts, debates and knowledge goals of Unger's work. The diversity results from the interdisciplinary composition of the authors and the different methodological approaches to Unger's concepts.
