Overview

Nearly 50 investigators of clinical trials of myocardial infarction (MI) therapy explain how their work has contributed to the late-1990s standard of care. This work examines clinical trials that have established the efficacy of particular therapies, including acute coronary reperfusion, the use of aspirin, beta-blockers, ACE inhibitors and the reduction of blood cholesterol; reviews trials that have cast doubt on the efficacy of other therapies, including the early and late use of calcium channel blockers, and the routine use of haparin, nitroglycerin and magnesium; and deals with alternative onerall strategies for MI care, such as invasive versus conservative management and the interplay of thrombolysis and PTCA.

Reviews

From the Foreword Cardiologists, and when necessary general physicians, have now an arsenal of weapons to combat myocardial infarction. This volume is a visit to that arsenal: to my knowledge, there is no other volume where one could find so readily accessible all the information concerning the many interventions that are available today. Clinical trials are described, explained and evaluated, thus giving the physician the ability to apply effectively the remarkable knowledge that is available. Much credit must be given to the editors and the many contributors for providing the medical community with such a lucid and helpful review. Claude Lenfant, M.D. Bethesda, Maryland ...a very comprehensive and lucid review of myocardial infarction trials and...highly recommended for all those caring for patients with myocardial infarction. -Acta Cardiologica
