Overview

In the ancient, inter-testamental Book of Enoch, a race of Angels known as the Watchers descended to Earth, sharing forbidden knowledge that shaped the foundations of human civilization. Their interactions with humanity led to a temptation too great to resist-many took human wives, resulting in a hybrid offspring. When Heaven grew angry with these fallen angels, a wrathful force descended to cleanse the Earth with a flood, wiping away their transgressions. Disappear: Into Shadow picks up millennia later, following Azrael, a once-glorious Archangel of Death who now walks the Earth as a renegade. An outcast, hunted by both Heaven and Hell, Azrael is tasked with overseeing the cycles of life and death. Devoted to the evolution of the soul, she believes that eternal damnation is stagnation, and that souls must reincarnate, growing and learning with each new life. To help them, Azrael and her rebel choir of outcasts have been secretly guiding souls, smuggling them from both Heaven and Hell, and acting as guardians who help souls avoid their predestined fates. For centuries, Azrael has resisted the temptation of one particular soul-Michael-following him through his lifetimes and visiting him in his dreams. But as the final reckoning of the world's cycle approaches, Azrael finds herself drawn to him more than ever, struggling with an emotion she has long kept buried. The end of the cycle is marked by the Balancing, a pivotal moment when the souls of Heaven and Hell are tallied. The realm with the most souls will dictate the nature of the next cycle: more suffering or peace, more challenges or tranquility. The world itself will be swayed toward light or darkness, and Azrael must rally her choir to prepare for an impending apocalypse. However, a darker force moves in the shadows-a spectral being of purple light, known only as the Shade. With agents embedded in both Heaven and Hell, and lurking in the foggy realms between, the Shade seeks to seize control of the Balancing, with plans to rewrite the fate of every soul. As Azrael faces this new threat, she must protect not only her choir but also the very fabric of existence from falling into eternal darkness.
