Overview"The Golden Guide provides clear advice and guidance for developing the habits of mind and effective behaviors that are likely to lead to career success - no matter what profession or field of inquiry. I wrote Dean Lazar's Golden Guide after working for more than a decade overseeing graduate law (LL.M) and policy (M.P.P.) admissions at Chicago-Kent College of Law and the University of Chicago's Harris School of Public Policy. The advice I offer reflects the lessons of my own career journey as well as my experience offering career counseling to hundreds of talented young people. Some may define pragmatism as the ""opposite"" of idealism, but I think the best way to think about it is to see pragmatic thinking as practical and pro-active, in support of of your ideals and dreams. Pragmatic behavior is self regarding but certainly not selfish, and this Golden Guide will help those who want to be efficient with their time, effective with their efforts, and successful in their careers and in their lives. Thai students studying in the United States will find this bilingual textbook helpful as they seek to prepare for on or off campus positions both during and after their studies." Wouldn't it be great if this were mandatory reading for all college seniors! Dean Lazar's book is thoughtfully written and grounded in reality. I gave this to my son who just entered a master's program last fall, and I plan to give it as a gift to each of my other children as they start looking at life beyond college. Amazon 5 star review from decafsumatra I love this book! Wise words to live by, great habits to cultivate, and specific actions to take - both online and in the real world - to get an edge in today's hypercompetitive marketplace. Tracy Samantha Schmidt, Socially Authentic Lydia Lazar has written the most useful possible book for a young person getting ready to graduate from college, who wants to figure out how to get a job, and, in the larger sense, figure out what to do with his/her life. The book offers bottom line practical advice, including basics like how to present yourself in an interview, how to sound enthusiastic and intelligent, what your resume should look like, etc. There is a lot of very useful advice on networking. But it also offers less common pointers about building resilience for the inevitable rejections and failures, and becoming someone with a deep sense of agency about shaping his or her life. Also tips on how to think about graduate school, with regard to one's career. Buying this book will raise the odds that your son or daughter figures out what to do, and how to get paid.
