OverviewIn order to determine whether a soil (or sediment) is contaminated by chemical elements, it is necessary to know the standard elemental chemical compositions of healthy soils and sediments that are free from any human disturbance. With this in mind, this book presents the elemental concentrations in soils and sediments that may be considered anomalies (whether anthropogenic or natural). This book also helps to explain why knowledge of the total elemental concentration in soils and sediments is important, but insufficient for assessing the risks of pollutants in soils and sediments entering the food chain. This assessment can only be made following the determination of the environmentally available elemental concentration (the only fraction of soil/sediment that can be taken up by living organisms). This book also summarises the main techniques for simple and sequential mineralisation and extraction.
