Overview

Conceived, designed, and edited by Victoria Cirlot, this literary retrospective addresses the relationship of her father, the Spanish poet and musician Juan Eduardo Cirlot, with the Vallcarca district of Barcelona. The opening section of the book features a compilation of the elder Cirlot s texts, including a new edition of the prose poem La Dama de Vallcarca, an interview with Andre Breton, and other pieces in which Cirlot pays tribute to the Austrian composer Arnold Schonberg, who composed the opera Moses and Aaron while staying in Vallcarca. The second part of the book is an essay on literary creation and philosophy in which Victoria Cirlot analyses, reinterprets, and finds the underlying theme the preceding texts have in common. In doing so, she reflects on her father s relationship with Judaism and the great respect he had for the Jewish people and culture. The final section of the book is a photographic complement in which Manel Armengol s photographs of Vallcarca illustrate the mysterious atmosphere of a place that called to Juan Eduardo Cirlot and Schonberg so strongly.

Juan Eduardo Cirlot was a Spanish poet, musician, and art critic. He is the author of Diccionario de simbolos and Diccionario de ismos. Victoria Cirlot is a professor of medieval literature at Pompeu Fabra University in Barcelona. She is the author of Figuras del destino: Mitos y simbolos de la Europa medieval and Hildegard von Bingen y la traicion visionaria de Occidente. Manel Armengol is a photographer and photojournalist. He is the author of Memories of Winds and Voices of Water.
