Overview

Recovered text message between Sophia Palmer and her best friend: Sometimes I imagine Eva melting. She is destroying everything. Seventeen-year-old Sophia Palmer isn't especially fond of most people on general principle, but she really hates Eva Flores. After all, Eva ruined Sophia's life-stole her look, took away her home, and used her Tik-Tok-famous status to turn the entire school against Sophia. So when something unspeakable happens to Eva on a class trip, everyone knows: Sophia killed Eva Flores. Eva is not the person everyone thinks she is. Sure, her posts may go for hundreds of thousands of dollars a pop, but her life is not the perfect sponsored dance video that everyone would like to believe. But how would Sophia know that? Sophia judged her from the moment Eva moved to town. She refused to like her the way everyone else did, no matter how hard Eva tried to win her over, Sophia refused to bend. In the end, it wasn't really a choice: let the world think she was weak, or tell the world a different story about who Sophia Palmer really is. Enter a seemingly simple gift-a blank notebook-given to Sophia by her best friend. When Sophia writes a story in it that goes on to play out in real life, she realizes immediately the power she wields. So she begins to write a new story. About two girls with opposite luck, and opposite means. About power and the people who wield it. About what happens when a switch gets flipped, and the person who has been struggling is suddenly holding all the power. Told in alternating POVs, and intercut with documentary transcripts, recovered text messages, and Sophia's notebook entries, BURYING EVA FLORES is a book about murder, power, and the lengths we go to protect ourselves, and our futures. This fabulist YA novel is a cross between Karen McManus' ONE OF US IS LYING and Laura Ruby's BONE GAP. Perfect for fans of McManus and Holly Jackson. ""Everyone thinks I killed Eva Flores. Sure, I hate how everyone was over the moon about her TikTok fame. And I suppose I got a little bit carried away with vengeance when she tried to ruin my life. But seriously, when my friend gave me that leather journal, I'd never had so much power in my life. It was intoxicating. Who wouldn't have done what I did to Eva? Now everyone thinks that just because she vanished in the forest after a party, that I killed her. That the blood on the jackets is proof. Or the text messages. The slightly weird thing I had with Eva's dad. The fire. The whole thing is far more complicated than you'd think.""

Reviews

Through clever prose, journal entries, and interview passages, Alsever pieces together a cautionary tale of hero worship, class struggle, wish fulfillment, and young people caught up in social media frenzy. With teenage vernacular and an uncanny insight into teen angst, Alsever accurately captures the insecurities, bullying, class differences, and desire for popularity that plague teenage life. Young adult readers will appreciate the revenge fantasy aspects and how Sophia addresses the consequences when they actually happen. Alsever builds steady tension and thrills with a paranormal revenge fantasy that explores teenage cliques and the perils of social media fame. The author's steady pacing and authentic characters will keep readers engaged until the satisfying ending. - BookLife Review Loved this book! What a twisty and thrilling read! I liked how the characters unfolded throughout the book and I went back and forth not knowing which character was telling the truth. It was unputdownable with a fast-paced, keep-me-guessing ending. Great read - kept me on the edge of my seat This story kept me on the edge of my seat! I loved how it flipped from present day interviews to the actual events in the past. The story had lots of twists and surprises that kept me on my toes. Great read! Intriguing Could not stop reading this book! Totally unexpected and I couldn't have ever guessed how it ended. Overall recommend this book 100% if you are looking for a good thriller. Characters you get to know quickly and a page-turner storyline Not only does this book reflect the culture of social media, that is such a big part of our lives, it also explores friendships and relationships between teens of all different backgrounds who are dealing with a variety of issues. This is a novel for our changing times and I would HIGHLY recommend it to teens, parents and anyone who uses social media (and loves a hint of the magical) - pretty much everyone! Supernatural And Fun To Read This was a book unlike any other that I have read. I loved the layout of the book; structured as interviews with different characters interspersed throughout the book, and even using text messages as part of the conversation. This was a great way to develop all of the characters and the story in a way that is clearly a sign of the times. I also enjoyed the supernatural happenings that underlies the story, which seems to be one of the author's, Jennifer Alsever, interests, as she tends to explore in her other books as well. I highly recommend it! Absolutely Thrilling Although I don't often venture into YA, high-school set stories, I absolutely loved this book. It's a genuinely clever, twisted, yet unique take on a classic coming-of-age story that hit all of the notes. I laughed, I cried, I bit my nails, everything, and I highly recommend that you experience it for yourself.
