OverviewHenry Reed Stiles (1832-1909) was an American physician, author and lecturer. In 1855 he graduated from the medical department of the University of the city of New York and at the New York Ophthalmic hospital. From 1859 until 1863 he practiced medicine in Brooklyn and Woodbury. In 1863 he became librarian of the Long Island historical society, of which he was a founder and director. From 1870 until 1873 he was a health inspector in the board of health of New York City. He also gave lectures on hygiene and sanitary laws in the New York homoeopathic medical college. In 1876 he got his A. M. degree. His works include: The History and Genealogies of Ancient Windsor (1859), Monograph on Bundling in America (1861), Genealogy of the Massachusetts Family of Stiles (1863), The Walla-Bout Prison-Ship Series (2 volumes) (1865), The Genealogy of the Stranahan and Joselyn Families (1865), Bundling: Its Origin, Progress and Decline in America (1871) and Illustrated History of the County of Kings and City of Brooklyn (as an editor) (2 volumes) (1884).
