Branwen's story is told brilliantly. Jenny Nimmo uses a varied and lyrical vocabulary, and the story contains beauty and horror in equal measure. Despite its brevity, the tale is gripping. Jac Jones's illustrations echo the story's tone. Branwen's face is lovely, as are the natural details which appear in most images. Yet even the most colourful pictures contain more threatening hues and images, like blood and storm clouds. The perspective of the illustrations is often unusual. Especially effective is the image showing Bendigeidfran from underwater. The book is a real pleasure to look at and read.
