The Book Buddies program sets the gold standard for tutoring practices in early literacy. This comprehensive guide is a 'must-have' tool for reading tutors and classroom teachers. The authors are well-regarded experts who weave evidence-based practices into practical lesson plans. The training DVD in the second edition demonstrates actual tutoring practices, and will be invaluable for both first-time and experienced tutors. Professionals who tutor struggling readers need to use this book! - Barbara A. Wasik, Associate Professor and PNC Chair in Early Childhood Education, Temple University, USA I wish this book and DVD had been available when I was training Book Buddies tutors. The authors provide thoughtful insights into differentiated instructional strategies for struggling readers. That's what effective tutoring is all about! - Amy Waddell, reading specialist, Charlottesville, Virginia, USA This guide gives tutors and their supervisors the tools and blueprints for a successful tutoring program. The authors provide a high level of detail on a host of topics related to activities, assessments, and lesson plans, enabling tutors to successfully guide children's growth from emergent to early reading. More than simply a set of good ideas, this book is derived from a program with proven results. - Elfrieda H. Hiebert, University of Michigan, USA Book Buddies encompasses all aspects of implementing an effective research-based tutoring program. It shows how to use assessment to target instruction and how to systematically help struggling readers make significant progress in reading and spelling. This book is a valuable tool for tutors and classroom teachers alike. The second edition has more comprehensive coverage of the stages of reading development, providing clear strategies for teaching children at each stage. - Sue Harris, first-grade teacher, Albemarle County Schools, Charlottesville, Virginia, USA The Book Buddies program is the foundation for the Community Service Society's Experience Corps Literacy Program, which has changed the lives of thousands of New York City public school children. Experience Corps has been independently evaluated and shown to have significant positive effects on the reading abilities of first- and second-graders at risk for academic failure. The Book Buddies curriculum, tools, and training and instructional materials have been instrumental to our program's effectiveness in providing quality literacy services. - Alina Molina, Vice President of Program Services, Community Service Society of New York, USA
