Overview

Imagine being a bird who cannot see well! That is the dilemma that Bobo, a sweet cockatiel living in the Australian forest, deals with everyday. His poor eyesight makes it difficult for him to see images that are off in the distance and it makes it especially difficult for him to land properly. To make matters worse, the other birds in the forest always make fun of him. What can Bobo do about that? He can listen to the advice given to him by a wise, old wompoo fruit dove named Gerald. While Gerald's advice requires Bobo to rely on courage he isn't sure he has, it ultimately greatly improves Bobo's situation, teaches him to stand up for himself, and helps him make friends, even with the bullies. Bullies, after all, as Bobo comes to realize, are usually bullies because of their own insecurities and worries. Sometimes they just need to be shown a little kindness.

Author Information

Diane Hodgson has read hundreds of children's picture books over the years in her varied roles as mother, elementary school teacher, and librarian, and has always been awed by the power that books have to teach kindness and compassion. After so much reading, she decided it was time to write her own book-a book that beautifully depicts the values of acceptance and friendship. Intended for children from kindergarten to grade three, Birds of the Same Feather has an anti-bullying, pro tolerance theme that will be easily understood and appreciated by its target audience. Diane lives in Toronto, Canada with her husband, Freddy, and daughters Megan and Ashley-who provided the book's illustrations. The book's main character of Bobo is based on the family's pet cockatiel, also, of course, named Bobo.
