OverviewDeke is a loner, a reluctant drifter, but he has a good heart. He is searching for a place to belong, a place to fit in, a place to call home. He meets, and falls in with, Cole. It's a moment that seems innocuous, but marks a diversion into a strange new life for Deke. Cole's twisted mind is prone to violence. When Cole drags Deke into a string of crimes, including murder, the only way Deke can escape is to move on, drift again, to keep searching. Their story zooms in on, and escalates in, Logan, an economically depressed farming town in West Texas. The inhabitants, mostly ranchers and farmers, uneasily co-exist with the land and climate. Forty years have come and gone while the townspeople stood solemnly by, watching as the town withered and dried. Without knowing the connection among the town's characters and how their lives intertwine, Logan seems to be exactly what Deke is looking for as he attempts to not only escape Cole, but also find the comfort he desires. His peace, however, is short-lived. With a wake of violence trailing him, Cole is on the move, vowing to catch up with Deke. Table of ContentsReviewsSharply written, fantastically plotted-ALL THE GOOD THAT REMAINS is gripping and moving and peopled with the gritty characters and down-and-out places that make up unsung America. Deke is the sort of compelling protagonist you can't help but follow through good decisions and bad; I couldn't put this book down. -Mary Helen Specht, author of Migratory Animals The Texas landscape of ALL THE GOOD THAT REMAINS is peopled by the silenced and the vulnerable: the day laborers and hotel maids, the disabled and mentally ill, and the lonely residents of a farm town beset by drought. The result is a gripping tale of suspense, a haunting exploration of the darkest places of the heart, and a celebration of the courage it takes to face our past and choose our future. I found myself racing through the pages and avoiding all my work. -Tarn Wilson, author of The Slow Farm In his groundbreaking debut, B. Mitchell Cator has created an unforgettable cast of characters and set them on a collision course with each other in the forgotten corners of central Texas. With a richly descriptive yet stark narrative, and a keen sense of character and place, ALL THE GOOD THAT REMAINS is one of those rare books that will have you reading long into the night. -Brian J.
