He first worked as a television critic for Living Marxism magazine and wrote episodes for Coronation Street and Bookside. He also worked with director Michael Winterbottom on a number of films Forget About Me, Butterfly Kiss, Welcome to Sarajevo, The Claim, The Mayor of Casterbridge, 24 hour Party People, Code 46 and A Cock and Bull Story. With other directors, he wrote the screenplays for Revenger's Tragedy, Hilary and Jackie, Millions and Grow Your Own. He is the author of the children novels Millions, Framed, Cosmic and Desirable.
