OverviewEarlier this year, I noticed that the 40th anniversary of the start of my 'accidental' journalism career was coming up and, rather publish a 'memoir' or just a bare anthology of pieces taken out of context, I felt that readers might be interested in what the great political journalist Philip Webster calls 'the stories behind the stories'. And that's the main criterium by which I selected the 25 pieces included here, originally published in City Limits, Gay Times, Time Out, Spare Rib, Diva, Kennedy's Gay Guide To London and Tribune. The subjects include Prisoner: Cell Block H, The Adventures of Priscilla, Queen of the Desert, the AIDS crisis and interviews with Derek Jarman, Lynda La Plante, Armistead Maupin, Sinead O'Connor, Frankie Howerd, Susan Sontag, Sandra Bernhard, Michael Cashman and Neneh Cherry. The articles which I have chosen to appear for this anthology are exactly as they were originally printed, except where I have been able to correct some typos, and spelling and punctuation errors not picked up by sub-editors at the time.
