OverviewThe term abortion comes from the Latin word abortio, which means miscarriage. However, it means an artificial termination of pregnancy. It consists in removing the embryo or fetus from the womb after implantation. What is medical abortion? The standpoints in this matter are not explicit. It is debatable whether abortion (interruption) can be considered a miscarriage. Abortion is a specific type of miscarriage. The authors define miscarriage as a special case of pregnancy complications, which is one of the reasons for the inability to report it and give birth to a healthy child, is termination of pregnancy before the sixteenth week of its duration, as a result of which the fetal egg or its fragments are expelled from the uterus. The authors divide miscarriages into spontaneous, which is not a consequence of intentional surgery, and artificial, which is the termination of pregnancy by appropriate instrumental action or the use of medication. In turn, Soszka does not use the division into artificial and spontaneous miscarriages, defining miscarriage as termination of pregnancy during the period in which the fetus did not reach the capacity to have an ectopic life.
