William Canton was a journalist, poet and an author of children's books such as The Invisible Playmate (1894), W.V., Her Book (1896/97), and W.V.'s Golden Legend (1898), which was published in the United States under the title A Child's Book of Saints. Though A Child's Book of Warriors was published 14 years after A Child's Book of Saints, it has similar stories and a similar style, so that the two are like companion volumes.
