After leaving university he worked for the Ministry of Overseas Development in the West Indies before resuming an academic career in Europe and the Far East. He has coauthored a number of academic books, written travel guides on the Hejaz and Yemen, radio scripts, and articles on linguistics and education. A Carnival of Lies, a novel about the complex developments in Germany between 1939 and 1945, is an outstanding work from which no one interested in the subject can fail to profit.
