Overview

Fleeing from the Nazis, Sigmund Freud arrived in London in June 1938. His house there was 20 Maresfield Gardens in Hampstead where he lived with his family until his death in September 1939. All his life Freud was an avid art-collector. 20 Maresfield Gardens is now a major museum of the history of psychoanalysis containing his art collection, the famous couch his patients reclined on, and many unique documents relating to Sigmund and Anna Freud and the history of psyhcoanalysis. Written by the curators of The Freud Museum, this book takes the reader on a photographic tour of the museum, at 20 Maresfield Gardens, acting as a guide to the artefacts within the house, and informing the reader of their relation to Freud and his ideas. Marina Warner's preface tells of the importance of the museum to her, lending a personal perspective on Freud's home to today's visitor.

Reviews

The Freud Museum is a vibrantly living organism. It is a fascinating cult site, a place of mythic memory, a shrine, a monument, a haunted house. But it also continues to pulse to a lively current of problems and challenges... Freud's stories have become our stories, his map our map, his questions our questions... -- Marina Warner * from her preface *
